Why Coral Reefs Matter

A Home for Many

Coral reefs are the foundation for countless marine ecosystems, serving as critical habitat, food sources, and breeding grounds. Without healthy coral reefs, entire marine food webs and coastal communities would face collapse.

Protection

Coral reefs serve as natural barriers, protecting shorelines from the destructive force of waves, storms, and coastal flooding. By absorbing and dissipating wave energy, reefs help reduce erosion, prevent property damage, and ultimately save lives in vulnerable coastal communities.

Supporting the Economy

Coral reefs support many jobs and businesses, specifically through tourism. This tourism generates billions of dollars globally each year, sustaining small businesses, tour operators, hospitality services, and entire regional economies.
